Ancient Origins

Ancient Origins is the seventh expansion in the XY series of the Pokémon Trading Card Game and focuses heavily on the theme of ancient and mythical Pokémon power. The set introduced powerful Pokémon connected to ancient legends, particularly Hoopa, which played a central role in the set’s storyline and marketing.

One of the defining mechanics of Ancient Origins is the introduction of Ancient Trait Pokémon, a special mechanic where certain Pokémon have an additional passive ability printed on the card. These traits give Pokémon unique advantages during battle, such as attacking multiple times or preventing certain effects.

The set also prominently features Primal Reversion Pokémon, specifically Primal Groudon-EX and Primal Kyogre-EX, which are incredibly powerful cards that evolve from their respective Pokémon-EX. These Primal Pokémon represented some of the strongest cards released during the XY era.

Ancient Origins also expanded the number of Mega Evolution Pokémon, introducing cards like Mega Tyranitar-EX, which quickly became popular among collectors due to its striking artwork and strong gameplay potential.

Another major highlight of the set is the inclusion of Shiny Rayquaza, which appears as a secret rare card and quickly became one of the most desirable cards of the entire XY era. The combination of legendary Pokémon, ancient themes, and highly collectible secret rares makes Ancient Origins one of the standout sets from the XY generation.
