Burning Shadows

Burning Shadows is the third expansion in the Sun & Moon era of the Pokémon Trading Card Game and quickly became one of the most talked-about sets of the generation. The expansion centres around mysterious and powerful Pokémon such as Marshadow, Necrozma, Ho-Oh and Darkrai, with a darker theme inspired by shadowy battles and legendary power.

The set continues to build upon the Pokémon-GX mechanic, which was introduced in the Sun & Moon base set. Pokémon-GX feature powerful attacks and abilities, including a GX attack that can only be used once per game. These attacks can dramatically shift the outcome of a match and became a defining feature of the Sun & Moon competitive scene.

Burning Shadows also includes several Alolan Pokémon, continuing the regional variant concept introduced with the Alola region. These alternate versions of classic Pokémon feature different typings and designs compared to their original Kanto forms.

However, the set is most famous for one card in particular: Charizard-GX Rainbow Rare 150/147. This card quickly became one of the most desirable modern Pokémon cards ever printed due to its stunning rainbow foil finish and notoriously difficult pull rate. Even years after release, it remains the defining chase card of the entire expansion.

Because of the combination of powerful GX Pokémon, legendary characters and the legendary rainbow Charizard card, Burning Shadows remains one of the most memorable sets from the Sun & Moon era.
