Base Set (Unlimited)
About the Set
Base Set is the very first expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game and is widely regarded as the most iconic set ever released. When it launched internationally in 1999, it introduced millions of players and collectors to the world of Pokémon cards and helped spark the global Pokémon phenomenon.
The set features many of the most recognisable Pokémon from the Kanto region, including Pikachu, Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur, which quickly became fan favourites and defining mascots of the franchise.
Base Set established the core mechanics of the Pokémon TCG, including Pokémon evolution lines, Energy attachments, Prize cards and Trainer cards. Many of the most famous Trainer cards in the game’s history were introduced here, including Professor Oak, Bill, and Computer Search, which were incredibly powerful cards in early competitive play.
One of the most exciting features of the set was the introduction of Holographic Rare cards, which featured reflective foil artwork. These cards were significantly harder to pull from booster packs and became the centrepiece of many collections.
The most famous card in the entire set is Charizard Holo 4/102, which became one of the most legendary trading cards ever produced. Over the years it has become a symbol of the Pokémon TCG and remains one of the most valuable cards in the hobby when found in pristine condition.
Base Set also had several print variations, including 1st Edition, Shadowless, and Unlimited, with the 1st Edition print run typically commanding the highest prices among collectors.
